Novartis Cube and Expansion, Stein Säckingen

Based on the functional requirements for a technical building with office space, a spatial atmosphere blending technology and nature was created on the Novartis campus in Stein Säckingen. The concept of a cube with a facade designed using parametric design resulted in an industrial architecture that is both functional and abstract.

The simple, compact geometry of the first building resulted from the layout of the rooms. The workspace on the top floor has a pavilion-like quality due to its visual integration into the hilly landscape, the screening out of the immediate built-up surroundings, and the relationship between the interior space and the terrace area. Plans have already been made for a future expansion without additional access areas.

Two years later, the usable floor area of the existing building on the north side was expanded fivefold, adding 10,500 m² of floor space. The arrangement of the building sections created a small plaza that has a positive impact on the overall spatial layout and enhances it.

The design is strongly influenced by technical requirements. The separation between the main building and the adjacent powerhouse reinforces the campus-like character, which is further enhanced by the different color schemes of the facades.

The clear specifications regarding the varying degrees of openness in the different zones were incorporated into a uniform façade. Central cooling is provided through the façade: air is drawn in on one side and the heated air is discharged on the opposite side.

Using parametric design, the perforations of the individual elements and their arrangement within the facade were designed and directly translated into the production process.
