White Pillow Park, Surselva
The White Pillow Park in Ilanz is set to become a publicly accessible sports and leisure facility featuring a dry training centre for freeskiers and snowboarders – the first of its kind for freestyle sports in Europe. The main town of the Surselva is thus establishing itself as a destination in its own right and boosting the region’s appeal in terms of both sport and tourism.
The starting point is a commercial site that has already been zoned for development and enjoys good transport links. The choice of location ensures high visibility for this exceptional facility. At the same time, its proximity to Laax – an internationally established freestyle destination – complements the existing offering and creates valuable synergies.
A distinct identity – rooted in the region
The facility combines the requirements of a technically sophisticated sports infrastructure with the needs of a leisure and cultural offering open to the public. At the heart of the complex is the dry training facility for freeskiers and snowboarders. This is of supra-regional importance. It enables year-round professional training for elite athletes, sports enthusiasts of all ability levels and families. The facilities are complemented by bouldering and climbing walls, a surf wave, indoor padel tennis courts and spaces for events and cultural activities.
The spatial and architectural foundations of the project were developed on the basis of the operational concept and the geometric requirements of the half-pipe, the big kicker and the rail park. Building on this, a project outline was drawn up and the feasibility assessed. The vision, target groups and potential uses or tenants form the framework for the architectural design.
In order to construct the facility, a partial amendment to the Building and Zoning Regulations is required. If this is approved by Parliament and the public, the project planning and the planning permission process can then begin.
