Society and politics are increasing pressure on the construction industry to measurably reduce emissions. While large companies are already required to report on climate issues, transparency is also becoming more and more important for other market participants. We have responded to this by developing a method that reliably records CO2 emissions early on in the project phase and highlights potential for optimisation.

Optimising CO2 emissions not only improves environmental quality, but can also increase property value – for example through certification or the crediting of stored emissions.

Different materials and constructions can be simulated directly in the digital model. This provides a sound basis for decision-making.

Reliable CO2 data is available early on in the project phases. It provides guidance for the next steps and supports the pursuit of goals throughout the entire process.

The innovation is based on linking Life Cycle Assessment directly to the digital 3D BIM model of the building. This allows emissions from the building construction (grey energy) to be recorded and combined with emissions from building operation to form an overall balance. A particular advantage lies in the volumetric calculation: instead of surface area values, the materials used are evaluated in cubic metres. This creates transparency and enables precise comparisons within individual component compositions.
